Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is an adult day program?

An adult day program is a structured daytime program, in a safe setting, for adults who benefit from socialization, supervision or support but continue to live at home. Members attend during the day and return home in the afternoon.

How is a social adult day program different from adult day health care?

New York State distinguishes social adult day services, which focus on socialization, supervision, personal care and nutrition, from medical-model adult day health care, which is operated by nursing homes. Learn more on our Social Adult Day Services page.

Where are you located?

The Grand Social is at 1 Terry Street, Patchogue, NY 11772, in the heart of the village and close to Main Street. We welcome members from Patchogue and across Suffolk County and Long Island.

Can you help with transportation?

Yes. Our concierge team helps coordinate transportation to and from the club. Ask about options for your area when you schedule a tour.

Social Adult Day Care · Suffolk County

Social Adult Day Services

Social adult day care for Suffolk County families: meaningful activities, attentive supervision, personal care and nutritious meals in a warm, club-like setting.

What It Is

Social adult day care, explained

New York State describes social adult day services as "a structured, comprehensive day program in a protective setting for less than a 24-hour period." These programs are also known as day programs or social adult day care.

Social adult day care is designed for adults who need some help or supervision during the day, including people living with memory loss or other cognitive changes, while they continue to live at home with family or on their own.

At The Grand Social, we deliver these services with the comfort and polish of a private club, so members experience a great day out, not a facility.

Social vs. medical adult day

Social adult day services focus on socialization, supervision, personal care and nutrition.

Adult day health care is a separate, medical model operated by nursing homes in New York.

Day habilitation programs serve people with developmental disabilities or mental health needs.

Core Services

The four core services of social adult day care

These are the core services New York State lists for social adult day programs, and how we bring each one to life.

01

Socialization

Planned, structured activities built on each member's skills and interests: music, arts, discussion groups, games, gentle fitness and outings.

02

Supervision & Monitoring

Staff keep track of every member's whereabouts, activities and needs throughout the day, with ongoing encouragement and support.

03

Personal Care

Discreet, respectful help with mobility, transfers, toileting and eating, plus support with self-administered medication.

04

Nutrition

Chef-inspired lunch at regular mealtimes, with snacks and drinks throughout the day.

Who Qualifies

Who social adult day care serves

Under New York State's standards, social adult day services are for adults who need the help of another person with at least one daily activity, such as toileting, mobility and transfers, or eating, or who need supervision because of cognitive or psychosocial impairment, and who are likely to benefit from the program.

Before a new member begins, we meet with you to understand abilities, needs and interests, so we can be sure The Grand Social is the right fit.

Your personal service plan

  • Created together with you and your family caregivers
  • Completed within the first 30 days
  • Sets goals for physical, mental and social well-being
  • Reviewed as needs change, and at least once a year

  • Joining activities, games and classes together
  • Help getting around the club and settling in

Paying for Care

Ways families pay for adult day programs

Many Long Island families combine more than one of these. We're happy to talk through your options.

Most common

Private Pay

Pay directly by the day or by membership. Many families find adult day programs cost far less than full-time home care or residential care.

Insurance

Long-Term Care Insurance

Many long-term care insurance policies include adult day care benefits. Check your policy and we can help with documentation.

Medicaid

Medicaid Managed Long Term Care

New York's Medicaid Managed Long Term Care plans serve people who need community-based long-term care for more than 120 days. Ask your plan's care manager whether social adult day care is covered and which providers are in network.

Veterans

VA Benefits

The VA offers Adult Day Health Care to enrolled Veterans who meet clinical criteria and are eligible for community care. A copay may apply. Contact your VA social worker to learn more.

Local help

Suffolk County Office for the Aging

The county's Office for the Aging can point caregivers to local programs, respite and support services.

Taxes

Tax Benefits

Some families may qualify for tax credits or deductions for dependent or medical care. Ask your tax advisor.

Putting Cost in Context

How adult day care compares

In CareScout's (formerly Genworth's) 2025 Cost of Care Survey, the national median was $95 per day for adult day health care, compared with $35 per hour for non-medical in-home care. That is roughly the price of 2.7 hours of home care for a full day of program, meals and supervision. Costs on Long Island are typically higher than national medians.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does your adult day program cost?

Rates depend on the number of days you attend and the support you need. Contact us or schedule a tour and we will give you a clear, written quote.

Does Medicaid pay for social adult day care in New York?

Some New York Medicaid Managed Long Term Care plans include social adult day care. Coverage depends on your plan and its provider network, so ask your plan's care manager.

Does Medicare cover adult day care?

Original Medicare generally does not pay for adult day care. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer limited adult day benefits; check your plan.

Will long-term care insurance cover it?

Many long-term care insurance policies include adult day care benefits. Review your policy's terms or call your insurer; we can provide the documentation they need.

Is there a trial day?

Yes. Ask about a guest visit when you schedule your tour.
